An Artist Diploma in Music Performance at the graduate level is also offered by the School of Music.
Admissions for 2025-2026
Applicants to the program must present the necessary credentials for evaluation of previous training and experience to the School of Music. These include transcripts from all institutions previously attended, showing a grade point average of at least 3.0 in all undergraduate studies submitted through the WVU Office of Admissions.
Master of Music in Performance
All applicants to the Master of Music in Performance must demonstrate appropriate proficiency in the primary area of specialization via an audition before a panel of School of Music faculty; in-person auditions are preferred but video auditions may be considered via consultation with appropriate faculty. Audition repertoire for the Master of Music in Music Performance should be chosen that allows candidates to demonstrate their current level of achievement. Early in the application process, potential students should contact the major teacher in their area and discuss audition repertoire possibilities. Initial inquiries may be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies in Music.
Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance
All applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance must demonstrate appropriate proficiency in the primary area of specialization via an audition before a panel of School of Music faculty; in-person auditions are preferred but video auditions may be considered via consultation with appropriate faculty.
Applicants should have a complete résumé and prepared list of their completed repertoire in hand for examination by the Audition Committee. On this list, use asterisks to indicate those numbers that you have performed from memory. Auditions are approximately 60 minutes of performance.
Repertoire guidelines for doctoral applicants to individual areas of specialization can be found on the School of Music Website. These guidelines are intended to be flexible and to encourage diversity of individual interests; you should choose a program that contains stylistic variety and that represents your own strengths. Works customarily performed from memory in public recitals should be performed from memory at your audition. Early in the application process, potential students should contact the major teacher in their area and discuss audition repertoire possibilities. Initial inquiries may be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies in Music; you will be given contact information for the major teacher in your area to facilitate your audition preparation.
