General Information
The primary mission of the School of Arts and Sciences is to promote the full development of the student as an individual and as a member of society. It includes many of the humanities and sciences courses commonly found in American colleges. These programs and courses make important contributions to the broad purposes of the institution, which endeavors to provide students with a knowledge of society, human experiences past and present, and the world in which we live; to foster an understanding and appreciation of the human, cultural, economic, political, environmental, and ecological factors that have shaped human history and current concerns; to develop the interests and creative capacities of students to their fullest extent; and to encourage quantitative reasoning and critical thinking through the study of mathematic, natural and social sciences. Students earning degrees in the School fulfill certain broad basic-education requirements and study at least one subject in some depth.
