Nature of the Program
The Graduate Certificate in Spanish is a 12-hour program that builds the knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic literature and culture. The students who complete the certificate will be able to apply the knowledge in a variety of educational and professional contexts. Individuals with an undergraduate degree in Spanish or a related degree with extensive curriculum in Spanish are encouraged to apply.
Admissions
The Graduate Certificate in Spanish is a 12-hour program that builds the knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic literature and culture. The students who complete the certificate will be able to apply the knowledge in a variety of educational and professional contexts. Individuals with an undergraduate degree in Spanish or a related degree with extensive curriculum in Spanish are encouraged to apply. Applicants to the certificate program must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (cumulative, as well as in Spanish courses), as well as evidence of a Linguistics course on their transcript. The GRE is not required for admission to this program.
List of Admission Requirements:
- Curriculum Vitae or Resume.
- A one page (300 word) personal statement that describes the applicant’s interest in the certificate program.
- An academic writing sample in Spanish, which may be a 10-15 page paper previously submitted for an academic course.
- A 3-minute self-introduction speech recording in Spanish.

- Explain basic concepts in phonology, morphology, syntax and dialectal variation of the Spanish language, and analyze the relevant data from Spanish using these tools.
- Identify, describe, and evaluate major historical, literary, cultural and social contexts related to the Hispanic world.
